In this blog series, The Faces Behind the Next-Gen CASB, we will be interviewing Bitglass employees from different departments within the company. We want to show you what it's like to work for the Next-Gen CASB! In this post, we will hear from David Shephard. Read on to learn more!
What do you do at Bitglass?
As Regional Leader in APJ (Asia Pacific Japan), I’m focused on establishing and growing the Bitglass business across key markets in Asia as part of our global expansion.
What does your average day look like?
There's no such thing as an average day here. Every day is an adventure! But typically, I’m balancing my time between customers, partners, the team, reporting, and go-to-market planning – or I’m racing to make a flight. If I manage to squeeze a ride or run into my day while picking my kids up from school, then I’m definitely winning.
Why did you join the company?
One word: timing. I really believe the market in APAC is ready for CASB. Everyone is in the cloud now and the awareness of data protection and privacy is at an all-time high. Also, the Bitglass technology is awesome, we’d secured great investment, and we were ready to go global. I was excited by the challenge of this global build phase – I still am.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I love being with customers. Our technology solves problems and offers value to any organization adopting cloud, so I get to be with customers a lot. I’m also really enjoying the cultural experience of doing business in Asia. It’s challenging work, but I’m having fun and learning a ton.
What is it like to work with your team?
There are a few prerequisites for anyone who wants to be on my team – always put the customer first, operate with urgency, and display a high level of professionalism. If you place that at the centre of everything you do, it’s hard to go wrong. I think I have high standards and I know I expect a lot from people I work with. Ask my team and they’ll probably say I’m hard to please and a bit emotional!
What is Bitglass' culture like?
The culture here is awesome. It’s something that’s very hard to gauge before you commit to joining a company. But the team here has a very positive attitude and everyone is open minded. There are no egos. Well, maybe just mine and Dean’s. And Rich’s. And now Joe Green’s after his recent Trace3 presentation success.
What's your favorite thing about Bitglass?
We’ve all been hired because we have skills and experience and we’re trusted to do our jobs. Of course, there are guidelines, but people that work here are encouraged to operate as people, not become robots. The leadership team is working hard to not slow the company down with more processes and rules. I love that.
Do you have any advice for people pursuing a career in your line of work?
Be sincere, be curious, and play the long game. Sales offers the potential for you to build a very satisfying and rewarding career, but your professional network and reputation can follow you for life, so you have to tread carefully.
What is your favorite Survivor song and why?
I’d have to say Burning Heart from the soundtrack of Rocky IV. If there was one Survivor song that helped to define the Rocky movie franchise, this would have to be it – and it's a real karaoke crowd pleaser.
